3 Tips to Get to Know Your Students Better

With video screens, fluctuating schedules, and health regulations, teachers this year are up against the odds when they try to get to know their students.

We have gathered a collection of exercises that will aid students in developing a deeper sense of self-awareness and purpose. Taking the time to learn more about them can also enable you to be responsive to their interests, even if you're separated by screens or masks.

Tip 1: Get to know students' names as soon as possible

Is anything more important than learning students' names early in the year? Your goal should be to memorize all the names by week's end. It is possible to learn names in many ways, including wearing labels, playing games, playing games with teams, and using students' names a lot. Another effective way is to practice your student's name often.

Tip 2: Learn about the families of your students

By knowing the families of our students, we will understand them better, and our students will be more engaged at school. During the first few weeks of school, try to reach out to each family. In order to get to know students, share a positive observation of them, then ask parents or guardians what you should know about them to best teach them.

Tip 3: Encourage students to share personal artifacts to showcase their interests

Encourage students to share simple artifacts that showcase their skills and interests. You might do this on an 'All About Us' bulletin board, in a class scrapbook, or on personal walls-places where students can post their work, pictures, and other small items. You can use these artifacts to inspire writing personal narratives or, if they are displayed in the classroom, to play a personal scavenger hunt. The information you'll learn will help you tailor units and lessons to students' interests, of course!

Your first priority as a teacher should be finding the best method of communication with your students. It is challenging for both new and experienced teachers to keep their students engaged in virtual classes. The best solution is to constantly upgrade your skills as a teacher by attending workshops and courses.
