5 Top Reasons Why Dancing Is Beneficial for Kids

Many people think that dancing is for fun, but it can actually be a great way to improve your skills. In today's fast-paced world, parents are under tremendous pressure to ensure that their kids excel academically in order to stay ahead in the competition. In doing so, they translate this pressure onto the young minds who find it difficult to cope with. As it is, the lockdown has not been very kind to the students, and on top of that, there is added pressure to excel at school.

There is an urgent need to lift the additional burden off our young children's shoulders and enable them to thrive in order for them to attain their full potential.

Have you ever wondered why kids can learn new things way faster than adults?

Firstly, they have a lot of energy and are more motivated to learn new things. A kids’ mind is curious and constantly in a state of absorption.

Secondly, their brains are still developing and are more flexible and adaptable than adult brains.

Finally, children are more open to new experiences and new ways.

An adult mind is full of junk where unnecessary or troubling thoughts have crept in. This is why children should be exposed to a wide range of fresh learning experiences so that their active minds can absorb as many skills as possible while they are still young.

What are the benefits of dancing?

 1.   Improves Physical Strength

The benefits of dancing for kids are limitless. To begin with, it helps them stay physically fit, improve their balance and coordination, and increase their strength and flexibility. Kids learn to work with fellow dancers in harmony, creating graceful and synchronized dance moves.

Dance, especially, western dance forms like hip-hop, funk, breakdancing are fun ways of staying physically active. These can be treated as sports which help in increased physical activity. Dancing is a great way for kids to get moving and stay active. It can help improve their overall physical health and fitness. It is a cardio workout that burns calories and helps to improve overall fitness.

2.   Improves Focus and Concentration

Contrary to the popular belief that dance can be a cause of distraction amongst kids, it can help to improve their focus and concentration. Dancing inculcates the need to stay focused on the steps and the music to stay on the beat which slowly becomes a habit and gets translated into other activities performed by the kid throughout the day.

 3.   Improves Academic Performance

In addition, dancing can also help kids learn new skills and improve their academic performance.

According to dance professor Eva Webber, "Dance can improve cognitive skills and academic performance…when we're dancing we're using so many parts of our brain. We're using our spatial awareness, our balance, our rhythm, and our memory."

For this study, she randomly assigned children to one of three groups: a control group that did not participate in any dance classes, a group that took general dance classes, and a group that took dance classes that focused on improving cognitive skills.

The researchers found that the children in the dancing lessons had superior cognitive abilities and academic performance than the children in the other two groups.

Did you know dancing enhances brain functioning as well? Dancing can help improve brain function by stimulating various areas of the brain. This can lead to better memory, focus, and problem-solving skills.

So, if your kid is finding it difficult to memorise the important English or Social Science lessons or is unable to solve the Math sums despite getting enough time to revise, practice and consistent efforts.

 4.   Improves Confidence

It can help build their confidence as they are able to show off your skills in school events and family functions.

All the parents worried about their introverted kids can find a solution in dancing classes as it is beneficial in improving social skills. Dancing can help kids develop social skills by giving them opportunities to interact with others. This can help them build confidence and make new friends.

When you learn new dance moves and perform them in front of others, you will likely feel a sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence. Dancing can also help you feel better about your body image and make you feel more attractive.

5.   Improves Mental and Emotional Health

Covid restrictions have not been kind to kids. They suffered emotionally by staying caught up at home. Dancing can help kids improve their emotional health by providing a fun and positive way to express themselves. It can also help them deal with stress and anxiety. It helps improve mental health, by enhancing self-esteem and relieving stress. It can also help to improve communication and social skills.
