The civil disobedience movement that was launched after the observance of Independence Day in 1930, paved the way for freedom in India. In 2021, netizens seem to have won the short battle over what appears to be an outrageous comprehension passage on “disobedient wives” as CBSE has declared to award full marks for the questions on account of having dropped the questions after a heavy backlash.
Meanwhile, it has left the parents and educators with some remarkable questions. How viable is this marks-oriented education system in times when the job market demands skill sets? What kind of India are we imagining for our kids and their future? The one that gets trapped in the general trivialities or the one that moves forward towards a brighter future?
The resistance against the misogynistic passage shows that we have come a long way as a society since Indian women first left their domestic roles behind to participate in the freedom struggle to women actively standing up (with full support from their male counterparts) for their rights and choices. There are loopholes within institutions and societies everywhere but the only way forward is to rectify these loopholes. Our nation is ever-evolving and education is the key to attaining full human potential. Many struggles and years later, as the most populous democracy in the world, we have come far as a nation, since Independence. Yet there is still a long way to go.
