Home-Schooling Your Kid During Lockdown
It will be some time before things can get back to normal, when your kids can again go back to school, play carelessly, and be glad about dirt and say “daag ache hain”; when they can easily go out and hug their friends or give them a high-5 or a friendly kick on the calves without having to worry about catching the disease.

It will be some time before things can get back to normal, when your kids can again go back to school, play carelessly, and be glad about dirt and say “daag ache hain”; when they can easily go out and hug their friends or give them a high-5 or a friendly kick on the calves without having to worry about catching the disease.

Till that time, while most of the parents too are staying home and getting a lot of time or at least an opportunity to spend time with their children, it is about time when they can start contributing to their children’s learning and not entirely depend on how their school or teachers want their children to grow and learn. There have been few countries where a lot of people have been giving importance to home-schooling instead of sending their kids to any school at all. But we are not suggesting you to stop sending your kids to school entirely, we are just suggesting how you can contribute in their learning and what all can your kids learn from you.

This is a very limited period offer when you can add a touch of yourself in your kid — when you can give them special attention, help them discover their interests and talent, motivate them to do good, mark their progress personally, and help them to work on their USP. This is because you are the best person to do that, and coming from you it will really mean a lot to your child.

Here are some of the things you need to keep in mind —

1.      Plan Your Day

If you are really keen about it, you can’t keep this random. It is better to plan your day starting from waking up till you hit the bed at night. Planning will also help you not to miss out your portion of life which you cannot obviously ignore. Also, keep time for the online classes that your kid needs to attend, and do the homework assigned to them.

Here is also a small advice for you. Don’t schedule your kid’s day in the school format. That means, don’t try to push in all subjects and activities in a single day. Let them indulge in a particular activity, even if for few hours at length, so that they will not realize when the day has gone by.

2.      Understanding the Concepts

While teaching academics, if your child is already attending online classes and doing their homework, don’t force them to learn new topics as such. However, you can certainly help them build the curiosity to explore in and around the concepts they are already studying. You can take help from teachers, other parents, your own expertise, or internet to understand how you can help your child in broadening their understanding around any particular concept.

The syllabus in schools sometimes touch only a particular topic for the sake of covering the syllabus, without helping the children understand how those concepts relate with the real life applicability. You can help them realize that what they are studying is actually interesting and is not just about getting marks.

3.      Hands-on Activities

Involve your kids in different activities that will prove to be life-hacks for them in the future. This is because sooner or later they will have to face it someday that life is not only about what they are studying in books, and sometimes life is especially not about what is being studied in books. Hence, make them learn activities such as gardening, cooking, sewing, composting, packing, tying different kinds of knots, caring for pets, dealing with waste material, recycling and repairing whatever is possible, etc.

4.      Evaluate your progress

If you are doing anything in the right way, you will definitely see its result. Therefore, it is important to evaluate and analyse your progress from time to time. For example, if your kid tries to escape whenever you are trying to teach them anything, it would mostly be because you are not trying it with the right kind of approach. There is no single way of learning, but you only need to be patient with yourself and your child and make it a fun thing for both of you.

You can also create a portfolio of all the things your child has learnt. You can display it in your home for your guests to see, share it in their school with teachers, or during admission processes etc. You can also share your child’s progress with us. We would love to see what your child has been learning. You can share your child’s art works and creativity with us on KidsChaupal mobile app.

5.      And Lastly, Don’t pressurise your kids much

Remember that where on one hand you are trying your best with your kids, they too are learning to adjust with everything. Give them their time to learn and grasp a particular thing and do not pressurize them too much. Being playful, spending time with toys, sitting idle, and getting bored are also an essential part of a childhood. How else will they know how to dangle their feet?
