Lockdown has given rise to live classroom and online examination. Although there had been a lot of portals offering digital learning opportunities such as MOOC, Coursera, Khan Academy, etc., with the extended nature of the current lockdown scenario, the entire education sector has shifted online. Many students claim to bring down the fees too since the schools or colleges are not able to offer a real learning experience to the students.
With the live classroom feature now offered by various platforms, the teachers and students give and receive one-to-one educational communication in the comfort of their homes. Many schools tend to ask their students to sit in their school uniforms at the time of their online lectures to mentally make them feel as if the lectures they are attending are no different than what they study at school. With the onset of this online education, even the parents are able to monitor how the teachers have been teaching their kids. In this scenario, where students are being monitored by their teachers, teachers are being monitored by the parents.
Although in the beginning there had been a lot of resistance to the live classroom feature, making it a mere formality on the school’s part to carry on with lectures and curriculum so that the students can continue with their education uninterrupted by lockdown and their learning can stay unaffected by the situation. The major concern is that when students return to school, they should remember where they left before the schools were made to close.
However, over some time, everybody realized that they need to adapt to the changing times. The live classroom was no longer a mere formality but an evolution in the new-age teaching patterns. It is challenging for the teachers to be able to come up with the teaching techniques in accordance with the live classroom system. But it has also become necessary for them to do so.
However, getting primary school kids to focus in the online class is more difficult as compared to getting the attention of the adult kids. This is because, as we start growing up, it becomes our responsibility to study well, learn more, and be responsible for our marks. If the grown-up students are not getting good grades, the major blame falls over the students only. They can’t entirely blame teachers for not teaching them well, especially because they have a choice to get tuition or coaching classes alongside. But with the primary class students, it is majorly teacher’s responsibility to get the unwavering attention of the students. And for now, the online classes are more of a formality for the parents, teachers, and students. Small little kids are made to sit in front of the screen and try to understand whatever is going on in front of them.
The live classes come with their own perks too. It saves the time of commuting. It makes the breaks in between more logical and de-stressing. It adds to more family time, more sleep time, better snack time, and more study or homework time as well. As people are becoming more comfortable with live classrooms, they are coming up with better techniques to enhance the online learning sessions. They are ready to acknowledge the role of technology in education in today’s world.
But this online education and live classes do not provide a scope of better networking, making friends, having real human bonds, learn from each other, feel the emotions and vibes that one can only feel in a human company, and exploring wider space to walk and run around. Also, the children will now remain more affected by their family environment since they are not getting an escape from that. Students will now be more influenced by their parents, siblings, and other family members as compared to the earlier times. And this influence will also reflect in their education, learning, and in shaping their personalities.
It is yet to be seen how comfortable students and teachers will grow with live classes and online education. It is possible that students will seek more online degrees after their 12th grade since online education will be available at a cheaper price than the offline one. Even the governments are trying to provide free online courses for the students, easily accessible to anybody who wants to pursue it. Once we are able to diminish or reduce the digital divide in the society, it will become possible to extend the reach of education to the underprivileged sections of the society. If we stay optimistic about it, it will help us cover the huge education divide and increase the literacy rate in manifolds.
It is also possible that schools and colleges will come up with an integrated system where students can access the online as well as the offline system of education. The theoretical approach of the topics and concepts can be studied online, while the premises of schools, colleges, and universities will become a ground for more practical experience, a brooding space for enhancing skills, and it will carry a better spirit of coordinated learning and working in teams.
It is yet to see how we adapt to the shifting narrative of education in the coming future, how we make the best use of digital education, online learning, and live classes, and how we are going to use this change for the betterment and for uplifting out kids, as well as our society.
