So this is a new term in school and you are getting a new batch to teach. As much as they are the new set of students for you, you are a new teacher for them and they are as much excited to know you and are waiting for you to enter the class in their anticipation as you have been wondering about them.
Students are excited to see what waits for them for the coming year. Some teachers continue from the previous term and they already have a bond formed which has reached a basic level of student-teacher understanding. In such cases, it is easier for the teacher to start with their curriculum as the smell of new textbooks and notebooks slowly spreads through the classroom. But if you are new for this batch of students, it is important to settle your class objectives in the first few classes itself so that you may have an uninterrupted teaching experience for the rest of the year.
It is important to construct an environment essential for learning in all students. Sure there will be some tough students to handle, and therefore it is important to set an environment where non-cooperative students won’t be able to disrupt the equilibrium of learning for the students who are willing to learn.
Build in your students a sense of community, a sense of shared responsibility towards each other. If one student is not interested in the class, he or she has no right to disturb rest of the students with his disinterest. Or the responsibility of the students towards class infrastructure and learning resources, as well as in keeping the class neat and tidy should be developed in the form of community building.
Apart from regular teaching schedule, you should be able to manage out time for the students who need more attention and extra support behaviorally or in learning. This comes under one of the major responsibility of the teacher and this should never be neglected.
Likewise, don’t neglect disruptive, disturbing, or harmful behavior of any students. Attend to those situations in the right way in the beginning itself so the students will know that they can’t take you for granted for the rest of the year. In fact, work on developing an environment of contentment. Intervene in students’ matter whenever necessary, making sure that no student is suffering for any reason in your class.
With these preset conditions, your students will find learning and acquiring knowledge much more interesting. Break the ice and make the class more engaging and interactive. Also, encourage students for silent working on any given project at hand. As they’ll find the tasks given to them engaging and perhaps challenging, they’ll have no problem working on it. However, start the session by giving easy tasks which doesn’t require much intelligence or hard work so that any student from the class would be able to complete it. This sets their confidence in the subject too and makes them open to working on tougher projects.
Once your class is silently at work, you can use that time to privately call in the tough or difficult students and give the required attention to them. The rest of the class wouldn’t mind it, and eventually these difficult students will also starts giving in their contribution over a period of time of working on them, to build a healthy learning environment in the class.
Of course you would need to modify these tactics as per the need of the hour and with each new batch of students, but these tactics are certainly worth giving a try and will probably yield you healthy results.
