Let’s not deny the fact that life is busy. Work and other responsibilities take up our entire day. Most of the parents in this generation worry that they don’t spend enough time with their children. They spend their nights wondering if this will affect their brain development. Many parents feel guilty about working full time and when they add up all the time their kids spend at the daycare, in school, asleep, with babysitters, and otherwise occupied with activities that don't include them, the remaining moments become especially precious.
Instead of being worried about the number of minutes or hours you can spend with your kids each day, focus on turning those moments into memorable ones. Often, parents compensate for having such a small quantity of time for their kids by scheduling quality time with them, an afternoon at the movies; dinner at a restaurant. But, the reality is that the quality time might occur when you don’t expect it—yes, at the dinner, but also in the car on the way to school.
Parents have to make choices to ensure the time spent with their children is high-quality. Here are a few tips:
1. Make sure to have a daily “connect” time with your child. If possible, do this face-to-face.
2. Make a special ritual for you and your kids. It should be something that can be done every day.
3. Reinforce positive behavior. Do it in the little things. If your child finishes his chores without you having to say anything, acknowledge it. Appreciate it.
4. Cook and eat meals with your kids whenever possible.
5. Schedule your time in a way that it includes doing an activity of your child’s choosing. Make sure to follow through. Finish the activity without any distractions.
6. Play with your child, even if it’s for a little while. Every little bit of time you spend with your child will make a positive impact!
7. Laugh with your child.
